On Saturday, November 28th, join Maestro John Barnum and the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra in a concert of symphonic music influenced by the music of three countries in “Russia, Hungary, Scotland!” The featured guest soloist is the incredibly talented 17 year old violinist Katya Poplyansky. A student of the world renowned violin pedagogue Victor Danchenko at the Peabody Conservatory, Katya has won prestigious awards, and has played with several symphony orchestras. Katya will be performing the second Violin Concerto of Sergei Prokofiev, a work of clarity and energy, and perhaps the best known and most loved of Prokofiev’s violin works.
Zoltan Kodály’s orchestral scores showcase the wonderful Hungarian music of his heritage, best known among them the shimmering displays of melody and color of the evocative Dances of Galánta. Based on the Gypsy tunes of a famous 19th century gypsy band in the Hungarian town of Galanta, these are dances that Kodaly would have heard as a child. In the course of the five movements, the listener is treated to various manifestations of the traditional Hungarian verbunkos style, in which slow figures alternate with fast ones and swagger gives way to irresistible foot-stamping.
Dedicated to Queen Victoria, Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony in A minor, known as the “Scottish” is thought to have been inspired by a painting that Mendelssohn viewed while on a trip to Scotland. The emotional scope of the work is wide, consisting of a grand first movement, a joyous second movement in the style of Scottish folk music, a slow movement maintaining an apparent struggle between love and fate, and a finale that takes its components from Scottish folk dance. The third movement rondo’s theme has a taste of Spain, with the clacking of castanets each time the theme appears.
Don’t miss this concert – one night only for an unforgettable evening of music to inspire and uplift.
